5 uses for Charcoal that you probably didn’t know about…

We all know the primary use for Charcoal. Every year during our 3 days of summer, the people of Britain dust off their Barbecues and load up the charcoal, ready for a weekend feast. But… Did you know charcoal has other uses too?

  • Can be used in Compost
Putting a few pieces of charcoal in your compost pile will increase the carbon content – which basically means it provides more energy to break the compost down a little bit quicker… and can reduce the smell as well!
  • Makes Flowers last that little bit longer
If you place a piece of charcoal (Lumpwood/Briquette) in the bottom of your vase (in the water) – it acts like a filter… keeping the water fresh for a few extra days, meaning your flowers will still look fabulous
  • Make’s your teeth white(er)
Activated Charcoal (charcoal fines, ground down and “activated” by processing at a VERY high temperature – which changes the internal structure – making it more porous) can whiten your teeth! It works by absorbing plaque and microscopic bits that stain the teeth. Activated charcoal can be found in your local pharmacy. Dip your brush in water, then in the fines and brush your teeth white(er)!
  • Keeps the rust off your tools
Placing a few lumps of charcoal in your tool box will absorb moisture, and will keep the metal from oxidizing (rusting)!
  • Keep your rooms/bathrooms/fridges fresher
Charcoal is a natural de-humidifier. So for rooms that are a bit musty/damp, or you may have lots of really strong smells in your fridge? Add a piece of charcoal (or a few pieces in bigger rooms) to the area, and the charcoal will absorb the must/smells in the room/area!
